Happy New Year

Should I say Happy New Year? Alas not everyone could have one.

I really am thankful for my life. I'm especially thankful that the earth didn't open up and swallow, and that the ocean hasn't devoured my entire city. You know, it's one thing when you see people getting killed at war, or starving in third-world nations. Those situations are usually manmade, and there's always a sense of hope, something like, hey, we as a people can put an end to war, to hunger, to homeless, to disease. Each one of us has the power to change the world, it's just up to us to do it. But what can we do when a natural disaster occurs?

I've been reading the reports and watching all that footage of all the dead in South Asia and all those people left homeless with NOTHING. Most people lost EVERYTHING they had. Everything! Including their families. Imagine if within minutes, everything you hold dear to you, everything you worked your entire life to build, all of your family, your spouse, your children -- gone. There's nowhere around you to even take shelter. It's just too fucking horrible to even think about.

I can't seem to get this tragedy out of my thoughts. If ever there was a time to reach out to those in need, now's the time! I donated money to the Red Cross at first, because they are helping in the relief effort. I just found a few other organizations who are also sending aid. I wanted to make sure I gave to organizations who can really get the aid to these places. Below are some links. Honestly, your money will be well-spent.

American Red Cross International Response Fund

Direct Relief International International Assistance Fund International Assistance Fund

Oxfam Asian Earthquake & Tsunami Fund

Sarvodaya Relief Fund for Tsunami Tragedy

UNICEF South Asia Tsunami Relief Efforts

I urge everyone to think about how fortunate most of us are, and how every little bit that we can give to those in need WILL help.
